Svensk ordbok

The dictionary app mirrors the content of the Swedish Academy's publication, Svensk ordbok, released in print format in 2009. The dictionary provides a comprehensive description of the general vocabulary in modern Swedish, focusing on the meaning and usage of words alongside historical information.

The app is built on the lexical database developed and continuously updated at the Department of Swedish Language, University of Gothenburg. It includes:

• 65,000 headwords with detailed definitions
• 100,000 linguistic examples and 5,000 idioms
• Pronunciation information and audio recordings
• Word class and inflection details, word formation and derivation
• Information on word style and appropriateness
• Specific syntactic instructions
• Dating for more than 70,000 words and meanings (from before the 1000s to the 2000s)
• Etymologies for around 28,000 words and meanings
• Well-known quotes related to individual entries
• Language correctness comments within style boxes

In the app, you can search for base forms of words and numerous inflected forms. With the help of a spell checker, you can find a headword even if you are unsure of the spelling. Search is possible for components of headwords and multi-word expressions like 'throw in the towel' (meaning 'give up'). Links within dictionary entries allow for easy navigation through the content. Lastly, when connected to the internet, you can listen to the pronunciation of headwords.

The app was developed by Isolve AB in collaboration with the dictionary editorial team at the Department of Swedish Language, University of Gothenburg. The spell checker algorithm is based on technology from Oribi AB.
